Software
Processes: A Retrospective and a Path for the Future |
| |
This
paper, by Gianpaolo Cugola and Carlo Ghezzi, attempts to
characterize the main approaches to software processes that
were followed historically by software engineering while
also identifying the strengths, weaknesses, motivations
and misconceptions that lead to the continuous evolution
of the field. It concludes with a discussion of where the
software process field is now and what the research agenda
for the future will look like. (22 pages) |

Process
Implementation |
| |
This
paper, by Sarah A. Sheard of the Software Productivity Consortium,
provides a list of implementation and institutionalization
actions that organizations should consider to ensure that
processes are properly used. Steps outlined include activities
needed to establish the environment for process implementation,
ongoing process maintenance tasks that need to persist,
and specific one-time implementation tasks that initiate
the use of new processes. (11 pages) |

Managing
the Software Development Process by Watts S. Humphrey |
| |
|
| |
From
the back cover: "The author, drawing on years of experience
at IBM and the SEI, provides here practical guidance for
improving the software development and maintenance process.
He focuses on understanding and managing the software process
because this is where he feels organizations now encounter
the most serious problems, and where he feels there is the
best opportunity for significant improvement. Both program
managers and practicing programmers, whether working on
small programs or large-scale projects, will learn how good
their own software process is, how they can make their process
better, and where they need to begin." |
